Five Shots: Clouds on the Rim

Some of our visiting family have never been to Eastern Arizona. Most people assume Arizona looks like the Phoenix landscape.  90 miles north, the Mogollon Rim is one of my favorite spots in this diverse state. Arizona ranks 6th in size among the 50 states. The total area of Arizona is 114,000 sq mi (295,260 sq km), of which land takes up 113,508 sq mi (293,986 sq km) and inland water 492 sq mi (1,274 sq km).  Here are some shots I took kayaking and hiking around the rim. The clouds were colossal. Which photo do you like best?

  9. Gosh, what beautiful pictures, Cindy. Actually, if you didn’t tell me they were taken in Arizona, I would have thought the lake pictures were taken in Minnesota. I like At the Edge, the best but they are all beautiful.

    1. Ha! Arizona Highways is a magazine featuring the beauty of the state. There was once an article claiming you could see all the regions of the U.S. and then they showed the mountain lakes and indeed mentioned Minnesota!

  19. So jealous you live near such a majestic area!!

    BTW – I’ve been sick as a dog so excuse the lack of visits. But I’m on the mend and took your advice from months ago – read One Flew Over…

    And wow. Only from a brain like Kesey could this exist! I’m almost near the end and haven’t seen the movie in so long I forgot how it ends. What I did like is that the movie made no attempt to portray it like the book – ie through the Chief’s eyes. His delusions and whatnot make it super interesting and I can certainly see why you recommended it to me, given what I am trying to write!

    I’m near the end, where they get the two hookers into the building. I imagine all hell will break loose soon! 😀

    1. Oh, great!! I love the fog imagery of Chief. Notice the longer he associates himself with McMurphy, the more the fog vanishes, or, he finds lucitity. And to have Ratchett as a machine is brilliant.
      I am sorry you are sick, and hope you feel better soon.

      1. Yes I loved the fog imagery and the cogs and machines in the walls and behind the nurse’s desk. And yeah its hard not to notice how Chief changes the further McMurphy takes it. I love it cos it reminds me of my book a bit – the unreliable narrator – and there might be some concepts in there that I think I’ll modify and make my own 😉

        I can certainly see why they filmed it completely different from how it was written. It would never have worked and Kesey’s acid-filled craziness would just be impossible to get right on screen.
